There are a number of ways employers can improve and promote equality, diversity and inclusion in their workplace.

First of all, every organisation should have its own equality and diversity policy. It covers the protected characteristics under the Equality Act and explains how to support employees with those characteristics. By implementing this policy – and others such as anti-bullying and harassment and mental health and wellbeing – you will show your employees that you are strongly committed to ensuring your workplace works towards compliance with the Equality Act. This policy must be easily accessible to everyone at all times. Living and working by the standards set out in these policies is crucial to making sure your employees feel protected and equal in terms of their treatment and the opportunities offered to them in the workplace.

With this in mind, talking to your team is one of the easiest and most successful ways to address equality, diversity and inclusion in the workplace. By creating a safe space and having an open and respectful discussion, you'll learn how your employees feel about your company's approach to EDI. It's also a fantastic opportunity to ask your team for suggestions on how to make your workplace more inclusive. In turn, when the team sees their suggestions implemented, they know you take their views and wellbeing seriously.

And as an employer, it's crucial to give your employees the skills they need to identify and tackle inequality. Effective and well-communicated policies should be in place, and regular training on the topic is crucial – as well as being easy and cost-effective.

Here at iHASCO, we offer an online Equality, Diversity and Inclusion training course that enables participants to identify prohibited behaviours that are unlawful under the Equality Act 2010, including discrimination, harassment and victimisation. Our course also explains how to reduce and prevent these behaviours and provides practical guidance on how to meet the unique needs of each individual whilst treating people with dignity, fairness and respect.
