HOST Level 3 is where things get serious. Even though interfaces are defined at Level 2, this is no guarantee that modules will be reused across systems. For example, you cannot use a GPU as the main processor/SBC even if they use the same interfaces. Level 3 takes the requirements a step further and defines performance requirements for the components. These performance requirements are derived from the specific requirements of actual systems and then combined with the interface requirements of a Level 2 standard, creating a specification for a reusable component. These Level 3 specifications are contained in a repository that both system integrators and COTS vendors can access. System integrators can use the repository to find currently used modules for their use in their system, and COTS vendors can get an overview of current system requirements and develop COTS modules that directly meet the requirements of DoD systems.
