Homomorphic encryption is an encryption function that allows computing encrypted data without having to decrypt it. It is considered a solution to protect private information in current situations such as cloud computing and machine communication. In this talk, I explain the basic arithmetic of homomorphic encryption: equality and comparison. Then, I show how to apply it to real-world problems: processing private database queries and homomorphic computation of (approximate) edit distance for genome analysis.
