A security researcher received a $107,500 bug bounty for identifying security issues in Google Home smart speakers that could be exploited to install backdoors and turn them into listening devices. The vulnerabilities allowed an attacker near a wireless device to install a "backdoor" account on the device, allowing them to remotely send commands to the device over the internet, access the microphone feed, and make arbitrary HTTP requests on the victim's LAN, the researcher, who goes by the name Matt, revealed. Such malicious requests could not only reveal the Wi-Fi password but also give the attacker direct access to other devices connected to the same network. After responsible disclosure on January 8, 2021, the issues were fixed by Google in April 2021.
