In Acquire, each player invests strategically in companies and tries to keep the majority of shares. As companies grow by placing tiles, they also begin to merge, giving the majority shareholders of the acquired company significant bonuses that they can then use to reinvest in other chains. All investors in the acquired company can then cash in their shares at the current value or trade them 2:1 for shares in the newer, larger company. The game is a race to gain the most wealth.

History of Acquire: This classic game by Sid Sackson has taken many different forms over the years depending on the publisher, but the rules and gameplay have remained the same. The 1966 version of the 3M Bookshelf Edition included rules for a 2-player variant. The original version is part of the 3M Bookshelf Series.

Many books and websites incorrectly list this as a 1962 release because the 3M Company used previously copyrighted graphics when they released the game in 1964. 3M received the idea for the game /"Vacations/" in May 1963 from Sid Sackson and decided to take his idea and implement it into graphics they had developed the year before for a game called /"ACQUIRE/". 3M's original game idea for a game called ACQUIRE must not have been very good, so they decided to take Sid's idea of Vacations and incorporate it into their concept of ACQUIRE. In December 1963 they released some limited test market games in 8 cities in the Midwestern United States with a box that bore a 1963 copyright. These games had Sid's original rules. When 3M released the mass market games in 1964, they had taken liberties with some of Sid's original ideas and changed some rules and gameplay to suit their production needs. They released them with outer boxes copyrighted in 1962 and inner boxes with rules dated 1963.
