Our journey has led us to the Sprint. Arguably the defining feature of Scrum. One of the five Scrum events – along with Sprint Planning, Daily Standup, Sprint Review, and Sprint Retrospective. It's essentially a shell for the others. Did you know that all Scrum events are time-constrained? They are, and nowhere is this more evident than with the Sprint. The Sprint Guide tells us the maximum duration is one month. And while some teams plan for as little as one week, most find two weeks is optimal. I started by saying that the SPRINT is the defining feature of Scrum, but what is the intent? The Scrum Guide lays it out. Each Sprint can be thought of as a project with a time horizon of one month at most. Like projects, Sprints exist to accomplish something. Each Sprint has a goal of what to build, a blueprint, and a flexible plan that guides the build, the work, and the resulting product increment. Scrum breaks it down into units of time, but still requires that within each unit of time we go ALMOST the full gamut: DESIGN… BUILD… TEST… Sprint after Sprint after Sprint. What about release? Scrum doesn't require us to release; what it does require is that we – in every single Sprint – produce a "potentially releaseable increment." Whether or not the increment ACTUALLY gets released is up to the team.
