The major Wall Street indices have collapsed due to growing fears of a recession in the USA.
The decline comes amid a wave of selling in global markets, including Europe and Asia.
Weaker-than-expected economic data from the US, including an employment report on Friday, have fueled speculation that growth is slowing in the world's largest economy.
Elsewhere, the Japanese market plunged, recording the biggest point loss in its history, and in London, the FTSE 100 index fell 2.8 percent.
