This video is a re-upload! We recently revisited this effect as I was never completely happy with the previous end result and made a major update to improve the quality of this effect.
WARNING: This is a behind-the-scenes walkthrough, not a tutorial. Do not attempt this at home!
This is our attempt to recreate a "factory explosion" with a scale model and pyrotechnics, supported by After Effects compositing and digital elements. This will be of particular interest to lovers of model special effects, pyro models and miniatures as seen in /"Thunderbirds/" (the 1965 original rather than the questionable CGI remake!) or /"Team America: World Police/".
Professional pyro miniatures are custom made from special materials and can break apart easily. We filmed this a few years ago and didn't have the budget for it at the time, so instead we did a simple first test using a model train kit and tried to set up parts of it to break apart. As the model was far too small and the flames far too big, we ended up replacing most of the fire after the initial explosion with digital effects at a better scale. Also, when we filmed this we could only shoot at 60fps rather than 120fps which would have been better. But we hope to try something much more ambitious in the coming years, so subscribe to see more!
