Ahh man, stupid pre-roll ads… It’s time we change the way we do pre-roll ads

The ever-boring pre-roll ads that play before the video you're about to watch. You hate them. You're looking for great entertainment and have to listen to an annoying ad.

They don't seem to be able to jump over them fast enough.

Skip!!!

And if you happen to be one of those companies that run ads without a skip button, you have to be prepared for hatred from the masses. You are deliberately interrupting other people's free time.

Here's what YouTube/Google say about their instream pre-roll ads.

"Pre-roll ads deliver your message to your ideal audience in a classic TV-like format that simplifies scheduling. You can reach millions of engaged viewers while they watch video content from approved and established YouTube partners and on leading sites in the Google Display Network."

Google is great at selling things, but we are smarter than the average consumer.

(Note: Every time I implement something Google suggests, my cost per lead goes up. Imagine that… Google is evil.)

We cannot be fooled by their well-designed PDFs and we know that most of the information provided by Google is pushing us to spend more money on their platform.

98% of the time, our pre-roll ads don't reach our ideal audience and average view rates are well below 1%. But that doesn't have to be the case for you.

YouTube has one billion unique visitors and reaches more U.S. adults ages 18-34 than any cable network.

It's huge and we can use it to our advantage.

Look at it this way

How much do you think it would cost to air a commercial on a cable network? A lot.

You can't just go to a cable channel and tell them to spend $10 on advertising and see if you get any results. Here's how it works

But

On YouTube, you basically choose where you want your ads to appear, how much you are willing to pay and who should see those ads.

You can't do that anywhere else.

However, you can't just go out and launch a YouTube campaign. We have to be strategic.

Everything in order

I love pre-roll ads. (I also have a love/hate relationship with Google)

Let me repeat

Pre-roll YouTube ads are great and we've found the cost per lead to be almost five times lower than other options.

1. When creating pre-roll ads, you must design your video for a YouTube environment. (They are not commercials.)

"Think about what we know in that moment: we know what they're going to watch, we know what they just Googled, we know where they are, we know what device they're watching it on, yes, we know they can skip the ad. All of that information provides an opportunity to create a tailored message that respects the viewer and the platform."

It's not easy and definitely requires a lot of creativity to make it work, but that's what Ydraw is for.

Here's a great example of an ad created for pre-roll.

These pre-roll ads are extremely clever, notice how they use the skip button and realize that you are going to watch this video on YouTube.

I'm really surprised that large companies don't take this approach more often.

Take Geico, for example, they came up with a great TV commercial…really weird and creative. But they don't take the time to develop a YouTube campaign that interacts with the audience.

Can you imagine if they took the Geico lizard and had it interact with the audience in some way?

People want interactive ads.

They want you to at least acknowledge that they are there to watch a video and that you are disturbing them.

2. Choose the right target group.

Big companies spend millions of dollars putting their ads in front of every YouTube video on the internet. Don't ask me why, but it's all done in the name of "branding."

Most people can't afford to throw money away, so be sure to limit your target audience.

If you are looking for instructions on how to do this, you can find them here

It's that easy

So next time you want to spend big on YouTube ads.

Follow steps one and two and rethink the way you run YouTube pre-roll ads.

You achieve better results and a significantly higher ROI.
