You've caught the testing bug and are thoroughly infected with testing. Excellent! You're undoubtedly producing more robust, less buggy software faster and more cheaply. Now it's time to think about what makes unit testing even better. We'll talk about unreliability, debugability, reproducibility, speed, specificity, independence, timing, and other characteristics of effective unit testing. Examples are given in Java and JUnit, but the principles apply generally to all languages and testing frameworks.

When Elliotte Rusty Harold isn't working in his secret identity as a mild-mannered software developer, he lives with his wife Beth and dog Thor in a secret mountaintop laboratory on a large island off the east coast of the United States. He is an avid bird and insect photographer. His novels have appeared in Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine, Crossed Genres, Daily Science Fiction, and numerous anthologies. He has also written over twenty nonfiction books for various publishers, including Addison-Wesley, O'Reilly, Wiley, and Prentice Hall. His most recent books are Java Network Programming (4th edition) and JavaMail API, both from O'Reilly. Find him at @elharo on Twitter or at http://www.elharo.com/blog/
