In this ultimate drone buying guide, you'll learn that the DJI Mini 4k video drone is very similar to the DJI Mini 2 SE, except it films in Ultra HD 4k at 30fps, rather than 2.7k at 30fps or Quad HD like the Mini 2 SE. It's not a 60fps drone, but it has one of the best drone image qualities of an entry-level drone under £300.
It also features 3-axis gimbal stabilization, 31 minutes of filming time (more like 18-22 minutes when taking wind and flight speed into account), 10km video transmission, wind resistance level 5 (maximum 30-40km/h), and automatic return to starting point.

There are features that this best drone for beginners doesn't have. There are no obstacle avoidance sensors, the gimbal doesn't rotate vertically and only takes horizontal shots, and there's no tracking or guidance either, although there are QuickShots like Dronie, Rocket, Circle, Helix, and Boomerang to take tracking shots. I'll show how to use QuickShots with the DJI Fly app and a DJI drone.
The DJI Mini 4k uses the RC-N1c remote controller and connects to a phone here. Additional batteries for the DJI Mini 2, Mini 2 SE or the Mini 4k can be purchased for around £60 or $80.
Press the H or Pause button once to pause the drone's flight. A long press will trigger RTH or the return to home button. If the drone is more than 20 meters away, pressing it will return the drone to its home point.
There are three flight modes: Sport mode is the fastest, Normal and Cine modes are the slowest.
When the battery level reaches 20%, the remote control will start to beep loudly to inform you that the battery is low. When the battery level reaches 10%, the drone will return to the home point and land.
A really interesting setting is the ability to switch the gimbal from Follow mode to FPV in the DJI Fly app. First Person View mode unlocks the gimbal axis to move with the drone.
You can record 12MP in JPEG and RAW format and take single shots, 3 exposure bracketing for HDR images, and timed photos from 2-60 seconds.
In the UK, if your drone is not a toy and has a camera, you will need an annual Operator ID from the CAA, which costs £11.13 per year. It is also recommended that you apply for a free Flyer ID at the same time. There is a 40-question online test.
