(May 29, 2009) This talk will explore ways to increase member engagement in online communities based on theories of social identity and interpersonal bonds. It will provide an overview of the relevant theory, describe the results of six months of field research, and examine how different approaches to moderating a group's content affect social identity and interpersonal bonds. It will conclude by explaining a series of design propositions that translate the abstract principles of social science into concrete design decisions.
