Data is information that can be numerical, textual, graphical, or audiovisual. Data is collected and processed for many different purposes, such as analyzing financial investments, forecasting the real estate market, predicting the weather, and even predicting what movies you might want to watch next on Netflix.

The data varies due to several factors:
Scope. The amount of data generated and collected. For example, a small company might track an inventory of a few thousand items, whereas a large company like Amazon might track billions of items.
Format. Data can be numbers, text, images, audio or video. For example, Facebook collects text data when you enter your personal information and images when you upload your vacation photos.
Access. Some data sources are public, while others are private. For example, some companies buy private data to learn about your shopping habits and predict what you might buy next.

Data used to be mostly analog and stored on physical media such as vinyl records and audio tapes. Today, data is mostly stored digitally on electronic and magnetic media such as hard drives. Large computer databases such as Oracle were invented due to the shift from analog to digital data.
