Data validation allows you to ensure that all data entered into a cell meets certain criteria (that is, it is first validated and then accepted).
For example, if you want a cell to only accept date values, you can specify this in data validation. Or if you want to only accept numbers up to 10 digits, you can specify this in data validation.
Dropdown lists are part of data validation because they give the user the option to select from a pre-populated list. This can be very useful if you have a workbook that you want users to enter data into, or if you are creating an Excel dashboard.
