VLANs are ubiquitous in networks and practically universal in enterprise network devices. While setting up a VLAN is conceptually the same, there are differences between network vendors' software in VLAN implementation besides terminology. I've covered VLANs in OpenWrt quite extensively, but not in BSD-based deployments like OPNsense. In this episode, you'll learn how to set up your own VLAN in OPNsense 23.1. Since there are many similarities between OPNsense and pfSense, you can also apply these steps to pfSense to create VLANs there. The best part is that regardless of your software vendor, you get the same benefits of VLANs, such as network segmentation, as you do with IoT devices. Plus, you'll learn the basics of creating your own network using a physical Ethernet interface in case you don't want to use VLANs.
