As the concept and scope of CSR continues to expand, new trends are emerging to address these concerns. These trends are reflected in the energy sector in attention to investing in green energy and reducing contribution to climate change, community involvement in large new projects, in bridging the talent gap to create high-skilled new jobs, and in working with governments to introduce reforms in social responsibility policies. Nevertheless, there are several challenges for CSR programs in the energy sector, which in turn are caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the associated recession are likely to be exacerbated.

This report examines how CSR, which has a long history, has become more sophisticated and demanding over time. From a voluntary corporate action, it has been increasingly demanded by shareholders, governments and society. Its concerns reflect broader societal trends and current problems, and its benefits to all shareholders through its increasing implementation cannot be ignored.
