"What happens to a person when they are treated as less than a person? When they are treated as a sedated problem, to be kept compliant, becoming more prisoner than participant?" This powerful poem, written and narrated by Scottish author Erin May Kelly, highlights the human rights abuses that still occur far too frequently in mental health institutions around the world. The poem also explains what mental health care in the community can and should look like, and the enormous difference that care that respects people's human rights and focuses on recovery can make to people's lives.

The poem was commissioned to mark the launch of new WHO guidelines on community mental health services, which are based on a rights-based approach.
