Our Scientific Committees have held their final meetings this year and in this episode we cover the findings of the Risk Assessment and Socioeconomic Analysis Committees.

Tim, Chair of the Risk Assessment Committee, and Maria, Chair of the Socio-Economic Analysis Committee, are present.

We are talking about the restriction of lead ammunition for hunting and outdoor sport shooting, as well as lead in fishing equipment. Here the Committee for Socioeconomic Analysis has given its opinion on costs and benefits and the Committee for Risk Assessment has carried out a further analysis of the data from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) on the risks of lead intake from game meat.

Also on the agenda were the restriction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in clay pigeon shooting and a statement on limit values for workplace exposure to cobalt and inorganic cobalt compounds.

Tim also explains how to set a derived no-effect level for DOTE, a chemical on the REACH Authorisation List of Substances of Very High Concern, to protect workers.

Tasks of the committees

The two committees produce scientific opinions that the European Commission and EU Member States use to make decisions on controlling chemical risks. They are composed of scientists from EU Member States and have observers from EU organisations representing different sectors and interests.
