background

With school starting again, many families are buying a piano for the first time. Let's say you've already decided on a digital piano. The next question is whether it's worth spending a little more money on a nicer digital piano.

As with most topics, there is no easy answer to this question. For parents buying a piano for a young beginner, the answer will be different than for a professional, and for many other types of customers, the answer will be different too.

In this video we focus on parents and amateur piano players taking piano lessons for the first time.

How much does a digital piano cost?

In this video we talk specifically about 88-key weighted digital pianos.

New digital pianos start at around $500, but prices from major manufacturers like Casio, Roland, Yamaha and Kawai start at around $700.

Touch vs. Sound

We believe that with digital pianos the emphasis should be on touch, whereas with an acoustic piano we generally recommend putting the emphasis on sound.

Therefore, we recommend paying particular attention to the key action when purchasing a digital piano. Most teachers will agree with this advice as well, as developing a sense of control and nuance in terms of touch is probably the most important thing for a beginner to focus on.

There are some great mechanics that you can get for a pretty reasonable price, especially the PHA4 mechanics from Roland.

Price increase

When you get into the $1,000 to $1,500 price range, you can suddenly prioritize both touch and speaker quality.

At this point, most players still play primarily without headphones, so purchasing a good set of speakers that delivers rich sound is more important than the sound generation itself.

$2,000 to $2,500
Starting at $2,000, an instrument in this category only makes sense for beginners if several family members might play the piano at some point or if you are looking for a longer-term investment.

Pianos in this category have very good key mechanisms and speaker systems as well as more complex sound engines. The overall build quality is also better.

High-end digital pianos

There are now very advanced digital pianos available for over $3,000 with some of the best components available.

It is difficult for beginners to see the differences between this and lower price ranges, so it is not so common for beginners to venture into this category.

Wrap up

These are the categories of digital pianos you will come across when buying a digital piano for a beginner. We hope this provides some clarity and helps answer the question of whether it is worth spending more on a digital piano for your family.
