What is Borderlands the Pre-Sequel?
Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! is an upcoming first-person shooter video game developed by 2K Australia with assistance from Gearbox Software and published by 2K Games. It is the third game in the Borderlands series and a prequel to the 2012 game Borderlands 2. It is scheduled to be released on October 14, 2014 for PCs running Linux or Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. The rumors about the game's existence were first reported on April 7, 2014, and it was officially announced two days later, on April 9, 2014.

Similar to previous Borderlands titles, the game combines FPS gameplay with mechanics common to RPGs (such as quests, character creation, and randomly generated /"loot/") and cooperative multiplayer campaign gameplay. The storyline of The Pre-Sequel focuses on four playable characters – all of whom were NPCs or enemies in previous Borderlands games and worked as henchmen for Handsome Jack, the antagonist of Borderlands 2.

The storyline follows Handsome Jack's descent into villainy, focusing on his escape and capture of the Hyperion Company base on Pandora's moon Elpis. The game will expand on the engine and gameplay of Borderlands 2, introducing new gameplay mechanics including low-gravity environments, freeze weapons, and oxygen tanks that can be used to navigate environments and perform special attacks.

The plot of The Pre-Sequel revolves around Handsome Jack and his attempt to escape from his exile on Elpis, the moon of Pandora, and take over the Hyperion Corporation's moon base for himself. The main characters – Athena, Wilhelm, Nisha and Claptrap – begin the game as Handsome Jack's henchmen. Jack himself has /"morally good intentions/" at the beginning of the story, but slowly transforms into the /"horrible, evil villain he is in Borderlands 2, who apparently enjoyed cutting people's eyeballs out with a spoon/".

Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has stated that the game's plot is intended to show how villains "can be morally ambivalent, potentially doing bad things for the right reasons, and then that mirrors what [Handsome Jack] does. There are several quests in the game whose sole narrative purpose is to show you that the villain you're fighting isn't actually a terrible person."

The story is told in flashback form, sometime after Borderlands 2, with Athena acting as narrator. Other characters from the series often speak up and comment on the story, including Tiny Tina, who "narrates" along with Athena on the player's second playthrough.
