While it does happen that an author writes a book and then can sit back and relax for the rest of their life, that's almost as rare as a unicorn. Most authors have to write a lot of books and constantly market their work to make a living, let alone retire. That's not to say you can't make a lot of money as an author, but it does mean that you have to be realistic and plan for your success, and not expect that success will just come if you write a great book.
