Before we get into the details: what are ascensions? Any craftable item can ascend three times. You can see this and what each ascension does in an item's ascension tab. To ascend an item, you need to spend ascension shards, which you can get mainly from chests, as event rewards, or by fusing research scrolls into ascension shards. The number of shards needed to ascend an item depends on the item's level. The lower the item level, the fewer ascension shards you need to spend. Specifically, it's 5 shards per ascension of a level 1 item, and up to 80 shards per ascension for level 12 items.
However, once that is cleared up, there is another level for ascending elements, the so-called ascension tracks./"
