Managers of organizations have the right to create an appropriate code of conduct for employees and require compliance with it. The code of conduct is the organization's mechanism for identifying the company's ethics and values and serves as a guide for individuals' actions. Research shows that making decisions without using an ethical guide leads to fewer ethical decisions, so ethical policies can have a positive impact.

Employees behave more unethically if they believe they will not be caught and punished, so most codes of conduct today also indicate the consequences that may occur if an employee does not follow the requirements of the code.

A code of conduct gives an employee a practical tool to determine whether an action he or she is about to take is within the acceptable boundaries of behavior within his or her organization. Almost all organizations have a code of conduct. Generally, the larger the organization, the more likely it is that the code of conduct will be in a written document or multiple documents.

Most large companies also have a special section of the code of conduct or a separate document called a “Code of Ethics” that sets out what is and is not ethical behavior.
