Until now, Apple stored an encryption key for things like your personal photos and messages on its iCloud servers. That meant that if you ever forgot your passcode or otherwise locked yourself out, Apple could recover that data for you. But that also meant that a government could subpoena that data, or a supervillain could theoretically break in and steal it.
In the US, and elsewhere over the next year, we now have the option to enable Enhanced Privacy for iCloud. In other words, Apple will be stripped of access to almost everything in iCloud. They will literally be forced to throw away their key. Then our photos and messages will be as completely locked down as our health data and passwords.
But should that be the case? Should we actually enable enhanced privacy?
