Various species of tortoises have become mainstream worldwide in terms of the trade in them. Spurred tortoises, red-footed tortoises, leopard tortoises, Greek tortoises, and even long-tortoises have been showing up in large numbers in collections, rescues, and pet shows, but one tortoise really seems to take the cake, especially here in the United States. The Russian tortoise or Horsfield's tortoise (Testudo horsfieldii) has long been a favorite in herpetoculture, and their size, personality, and climate tolerance prove why. Unfortunately, Russian tortoises are being driven out of their native habitat in significant numbers and shipped to other countries for the sophisticated pet trade, and it seems to have been that way forever. They are now listed as endangered by the IUCN, and will surely be listed as at least threatened in the coming years. Regardless, they are here to stay, as they remain one of the most traded and kept tortoise species, if not the most traded and kept. At Garden State Tortoise, we take in more rescued Russian tortoises than any other species of tortoise. They are bulldozers of a tortoise, full of charisma and people just LOVE them. Unfortunately, many keepers don't care for them properly, so in this video we cover that, proper identification and even a little about their flight to the moon… yes, the MOON.
