Hedgehog sanctuary in the hornbeam forest:
A family run charity saving UK wild hedgehogs. Based in Harpenden and covering the surrounding area in Hertfordshire, they were founded in April 2015 and have been saving wild animals since the 1980s. A mother and son team, they work daily to rehabilitate wild hedgehogs and orphaned baby hedgehogs that are sick, injured or underweight. Since 2015 we have rescued, rehabilitated and released thousands of injured or orphaned hedgehogs.

We hope that through this platform we can raise awareness and highlight ways you can help Britain's wild hedgehogs.

We use 100% of donations to help the hedgehogs. Registered charity no. 1190048

WHY HAS THE POPULATION OF WILD HEDGEHOG IN BRITAIN DECLINED SO SEVERELY SINCE 2000?
Since 2022, the wild British hedgehog has been on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of British Mammals. Since 2000, hedgehog numbers have declined by 30-75% in various rural areas. The reasons for their decline are complex and not yet fully understood, but two of the main pressures facing hedgehogs in both rural and urban areas are lack of suitable habitat and habitat fragmentation. In 2020, it was estimated (PTES) that up to 335,000 hedgehogs are killed on the roads each year. Roads also create invisible barriers for hedgehogs. Their habitats have shrunk and their inability to reach and migrate through gardens and roads has become impossible in most cases. The use of poisons such as slug pellets and intensive agricultural use are also contributing to their declining populations, as well as the loss of hedgerows and the use of pesticides.
