A Course in Miracles, Lesson 31, full text…

Lesson 31

I am not the victim of the world I see.

1. Today's idea is the introduction to your declaration of liberation. ²Again, the idea should be applied to the external world as well as the internal world. ³In applying the idea, we use a form of practice that is used more and more frequently and with the modifications indicated. ⁴In general, the form involves two aspects: one is that you apply the idea on a more sustained basis, and the other is that the idea consists of frequent applications of the idea throughout the day.

2. Two long practice sessions with today's thought are necessary, one in the morning and one in the evening.² Three to five minutes are recommended for each of these sessions.³ During this time, look around slowly while repeating the thought two or three times.⁴ Then close your eyes and apply the same thought to your inner world.⁵ You will escape both at the same time, for the inner is the cause of the outer.

3. As you observe your inner world, simply allow any thoughts that come to mind to come into your awareness. Consider each thought for a moment, and then let the next one replace it.² Try not to establish a hierarchy between them.³ Watch them come and go, as dispassionately as possible.⁴ Do not dwell on any particular thought, but try to let the stream of thoughts flow on evenly and calmly, without any special effort on your part.⁵ As you sit and quietly observe your thoughts, repeat today's thought as many times as you like, but without rushing.

4. Also, repeat today's thought as often as possible throughout the day. "Remember that you are making a declaration of independence in the name of your own freedom. And in your freedom lies the freedom of the world."

5. Today's thought is also particularly useful to use as a response to any kind of temptation that might arise. "It is a declaration that you will not yield to it and place yourself in bondage."
