A Course in Miracles, Lesson 25, full text…

Lesson 25

I don't know what this is all good for.

1. Purpose is meaning. ²Today's thought explains why nothing you see means anything. ³You don't know what it is for. ⁴Therefore it is meaningless to you. ⁵Everything is for your own good. ⁶That is what it is for, that is its purpose, that is what it means. ⁷By realizing this, your purposes are unified. ⁸By realizing this, what you see takes on meaning.

2. You perceive the world and everything in it as significant in terms of ego goals. ²These goals have nothing to do with your own interests, because the ego is not you. ³This false identification makes you unable to understand what anything is for. ⁴As a result, you are bound to misuse it. ⁵If you believe this, you will try to withdraw the goals you have assigned to the world instead of trying to reinforce them.

3. Another way to describe the goals you now perceive is to say that they all have to do with "personal" interests.²Since you have no personal interests, your goals have nothing to do with anything in reality.³If you pursue them, therefore, you have no goals at all.⁴And therefore, you do not know what anything is for.

4. Before you can make any sense of today's exercises, one more thought is necessary. ²At the most superficial levels, you recognize a purpose. ³But purpose cannot be understood at these levels. ⁴For example, you understand that a telephone is for talking to someone who is not physically in your immediate vicinity. ⁵What you do not understand is why you want to reach them. ⁶And that is what makes your contact with them meaningful or not.

5. It is crucial to your learning that you are willing to give up the goals you have set for yourself for everything. ²Realizing that they are meaningless and not "good" or "bad" is the only way to achieve this. ³Today's idea is a step in that direction.

6. Six practice sessions of two minutes each are required. ²Each session should begin with a slow repetition of today's thought. Then you should look around and rest your gaze on whatever catches your eye, whether near or far, "important" or "unimportant," "human" or "nonhuman." ³As your eyes rest on each selected object, say something like:

“I don’t know what this chair is for.
⁵I don't know what this pencil is for.
⁶I don't know what this hand is for.

⁷Say this very slowly, without taking your eyes off the topic until you have finished saying it. ⁸Then move on to the next topic, applying today's idea as before.
