The beauty of the Internet is that it enables us to get things done efficiently and effectively, allowing us to continue to focus on the core functions of our business. However, it is important that we understand and remain aware of the risks associated with connecting to the Internet.

Hackers and cyber actors don't care about the size of your business or the download speed of your network. It's nothing personal, they just want to crash your digital party and leave it in shambles. To avoid disaster, you should apply the following seven network security tips for small businesses:

1) Create passwords that are difficult to guess – Don't reuse old passwords. Once they are used, they are stored somewhere. One breach is all it takes and you are hacked! Use numbers and symbols, but not in any particular order. A combination of uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols is much harder for a hacker to guess. Use a longer password. The longer the password, the harder it is to guess. Most experts recommend a password length of 12 to 15 characters.

2) Change the default administrator login credentials. Whether it's on your new modem from your cable company, the new wireless router you bought online, or your new fancy website, if there's a generic "administrator" login, change it immediately to strengthen your small business's network security.

3) Change your default network name – As silly as it may sound, changing the SSID signals to potential hackers that you have most likely changed your password. This may not deter them from attempting a hack, but it's better than making them think you're an easy digital victim.

4) Pause broadcasting your SSID – Your wireless router will normally broadcast your SSID at regular intervals to people looking for a new network. Router manufacturers originally designed this feature for businesses where customers are often in and out of range (for example, walking to their car and returning to the business).

5) Don't automatically connect to public Wi-Fi – As convenient as it is to have your phone or computer log into that Starbucks Wi-Fi hotspot, it's also a potential hacker trap. If it does and your business can't avoid it, use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to encrypt your data, enable the "Always use HTTPS" option to encrypt your login credentials, and disable sharing of your files and folders.

6) Keep your antivirus software up to date – Antivirus software is a great way to improve your small business network security. Good antivirus software will automatically identify, isolate and remove the different types of malware such as viruses, ransomware and worms.

7) Back up your data regularly – No matter how prepared you are for a cyberattack, sometimes the bad guys win. Since most of your business information and documents are now online, it's important to back up your data regularly.

If you run a business in today's digital world, you most likely have to use connected devices like computers, laptops, smartphones and tablets. With every connection, there is a risk of being hacked. But with these seven network security tips for small businesses, you'll have a better chance of protecting your data.
