Did you know that most of us spend 13 hours a day sitting?

All this inactivity can cause serious health problems. But it can be difficult to stay fit and healthy when you have a sedentary job.

Here are six tips to improve your health and well-being at work…

1. Build exercise into your commute. Why not walk, cycle or jog part of the way to work? Or, if you use public transport, get off one stop early and walk the rest of the way.

2. Take regular screen breaks. Try to step away from your desk for a few minutes every hour. Chat with a colleague instead of emailing them, make a phone call standing up, or look out the window.

3. Use the stairs. Forget the elevator and take the stairs. This will increase your aerobic capacity, increase your heart rate and increase your muscle strength.

4. Hold meetings standing or walking. This not only gets you on your feet, but also makes your meetings fun, creative and productive.

5. Go outside for lunch. Make a point to leave your desk for lunch, even if it's just for a quick walk around the block. This will improve circulation, flex your joints, and give you time for mental rest and reflection.

6. Eat well! To be truly effective, healthy behaviors must combine exercise and diet, so prepare something that is both nutritious and delicious!
