Last week I attended a virtual conference called “This Can Happen.”

This Can Happen supports employers and employees around the world to create a positive environment for good mental health in the workplace.

For me, there are three new trends in corporate wellness to keep an eye on in 2022:

First, employees have a need for holistic treatment.

We all know the buzzwords surrounding job satisfaction: meaning, sustainability, direction, financial reward, impact, etc.

However, if you look beyond these points (which many employees want), it ultimately comes down to a feeling of wholeness. Employees no longer want to have a dual identity, one as a company professional and one as the person they REALLY are.

The pandemic and the newly created flexible working world have been the push employees needed to show up authentically in every aspect of their lives. And with that, thankfully, a new level of truth and honesty has surfaced regarding the mental health support needed.

The second emerging trend in corporate wellness is storytelling.

You see, the employee’s desire for wholeness also goes hand in hand with an invitation from the employer to tell his or her story.

The importance and acceptance of storytelling in the workplace has grown tremendously over the past 18 months and will continue to do so.

It is now generally accepted that all employees have some form of mental health problem – whether it is themselves, their partner or their child. And what is more important: these mental health problems significantly impair the employee's ability to concentrate and perform at full capacity in the workplace.

This is especially true for mothers I work with.

Providing working mothers with the right support to manage their home and personal lives is no longer seen as a luxury or a perk – it is a necessity that employers must provide to encourage outstanding performance.

And the third trend I see (complementing this desire for holistic and transparent storytelling) is that group coaching is now seen as a popular method for improving company culture.

This gave me great motivation, as a large part of my work for companies is focused on group coaching for mothers.

Group coaching and group programs create a culture of belonging and provide employees with mental health tools to succeed personally and professionally, while also encouraging their colleagues to take full responsibility for their mental and emotional health.

So there you have it – the three trends for corporate wellbeing in 2022 that I took away from the This Can Happen virtual conference: holistic thinking, storytelling and group coaching… all three are massive changes designed to improve employee mental health and job performance and strengthen company culture.

A special thank you to Zoe Sinclair, founder of This Can Happen, for organising such an educational and transformative event. The evolution of occupational health is extremely exciting and I encourage you to check out This Can Happen for more information and resources!
