Structural dynamics is a type of structural analysis that studies the behavior of a structure subjected to dynamic (high acceleration) loads. Dynamic loads include people, wind, waves, traffic, earthquakes, and explosions. Any structure can be subjected to dynamic loads.

The first step in dynamics is modal analysis.
Modal analysis is the study of the dynamic character of a system, which is defined independently of the loads applied to the system and the response of the system. Structural dynamics is the study of the response of structures to applied loads.
