Root is an adventure and war game in which 2 to 4 (1 to 6 with the Riverfolk expansion) players fight for control of a vast wilderness.

The nefarious Marquise de Cat has taken possession of the great forest area to exploit its riches. Under her rule, the forest's many creatures have banded together. This alliance will seek to strengthen their resources and undermine the cats' rule. In this endeavor, the Alliance may enlist the aid of the wandering vagabonds, who can travel the more dangerous forest paths. Although some sympathize with the Alliance's hopes and dreams, these wanderers are old enough to remember the great birds of prey that once ruled the forests.

Meanwhile, on the outskirts of the region, the proud, quarrelsome Eyrie have found a new commander who they hope will lead their faction to regain their ancient birthright. The stage is set for a contest that will decide the fate of the great forest. It is up to the players to decide which faction will ultimately prevail.

Root represents the next step in our evolution of asymmetric design. Like Vast: The Crystal Caverns, each player in Root has unique abilities and a different win condition. With the help of beautiful, versatile cards, a truly asymmetric design has never been more accessible.

The Cats play a game of engineering and logistics as they try to control the vast wilderness. By gathering wood, they can build workshops, sawmills and barracks. They win by constructing new buildings and craft workshops.

The Eyrie gathers its falcons to reclaim the forest. They must conquer as much territory and build roosts as possible before they fall into squabbling again.

Hiding in the shadows, recruiting forces and plotting, the Alliance starts slowly and becomes a dramatic presence later in the game – but only if it manages to keep the other players in check.

Meanwhile, the Drifter exploits all sides of the conflict to his own advantage, hiding a mysterious quest. Explore the board, fight other factions, and work towards achieving your hidden goal.
